Short answer: No.

Polished concrete is not maintenance-free – you will need to clean and look after it if you want to keep its condition and make it last for years.

But don’t let that stop you from polished concrete floors. Because the fact is, every floor needs care and maintenance. There is no such thing as a maintenance-free floor!

The great news, though, is that polished concrete floors are very low maintenance. If you want floors that you won’t need to spend much time and money on looking after, polished concrete is for you.

Why Polished Concrete is Low Maintenance

Simple upkeep

One of the best things about polished concrete floors is that they’re incredibly easy to clean and maintain. In most cases, all they need is a quick round of sweeping and mopping with clean water.

Cost-effective

The simple upkeep of polished concrete means you won’t need to spend as much money on cleaning products and cleaning solutions.

Over time, this can save you plenty of money and reduce your property’s maintenance costs.

Hard-wearing surface

Thanks to its natural strength and toughness, polished concrete does not scratch or get damaged easily.

This means your floors are less likely to require repairs or professional service over the years.

Many polished concrete floors can also be sealed with special materials to make them even stronger, preventing the absorption of dirt and liquids on its surface.

How to Take Care of Your Polished Concrete Floors

Set a regular cleaning schedule

Regular and frequent cleaning is the most important thing that polished concrete needs for maintenance.

We recommend a daily and weekly cleaning schedule to make sure you remove dirt and debris before it builds up and becomes harder to remove.

With polished concrete floors, remember that quick daily cleaning sessions are often much better than cleaning them only every few months or so.

Wipe spills away immediately

Although many polished concrete floors are resistant to liquids, you don’t want spills to sit too long on their surface.

Most polished concrete surfaces are porous enough to absorb long-standing liquids, which could lead to stains and damage.

Prevent this by wiping spills away immediately and making sure your polished concrete floors are always dry.

Consult professionals if necessary

If parts of your polished concrete floors have chips, cracks, or stains, don’t be afraid to consult with professionals about having them fixed.

The longer you leave marks and surface damage on your polished concrete floors, the more difficult and expensive they could be to repair.

The Closest Thing to Maintenance-Free Floors

Polished concrete floors may not be completely maintenance-free, but they are incredibly low-maintenance. So low maintenance that they’re perhaps the closest thing you can get to a maintenance-free floor.

When polished concrete floors are applied and finished correctly, they can easily last years (or even decades) with minimal service and maintenance.

If you want polished concrete floors that will last and give you the best value for your money, have a chat with us to find out how we can help.

When it comes to choosing a finish for your concrete floors, your decision often boils down to two main options: polished concrete and epoxy floor coating.

Although these two may look similar, they differ in many ways that could affect how well they serve your needs.

To help you decide what’s right for your property, we’ve compared each option across the different factors you need to consider when choosing a concrete floor finish.

Surface Texture

Polished concrete is renowned for its smooth and shiny surface that doesn’t scratch or peel easily. It’s the ideal finish if you want your floors to have an incredibly smooth surface with little to no texture. It can also be modified to create the level of sheen you want.

Epoxy floor coating, on the other hand, is known for its rougher surface texture, which provides a more textured and more non-slip surface. This can be useful in environments that require more caution and safety (e.g. industrial warehouses).

With that said, polished concrete can also be designed with some texture for commercial or industrial use, allowing it to meet the demands of many worksites.

Longevity

Both polished concrete and epoxy floor coating can last several years before requiring replacement or refurbishment. Its longevity, however, will depend mainly on where you use them.

Between the two, epoxy coating is often considered to be the tougher surface, since it can increase the load rating of the concrete floor it’s applied on. This makes it ideal for areas that experience heavy traffic from people and machinery. But due to the heavy forces it regularly experiences, many epoxy floor coats often only last between 3 to 5 years.

Polished concrete, however, will last incredibly long in areas that won’t experience industrial levels of foot traffic and machinery. In fact, some polished concrete floors can last up to 10 years before requiring refurbishment.

Cost

Polished concrete typically costs less than epoxy floor coating, making it the more attractive choice if budget is an issue. Aside from its lower installation cost, polished concrete also often costs less to refurbish than epoxy coating, making it the more affordable and cost-effective option for a long-term finish.

Chemical Resistance

If chemical resistance is a major requirement in your floors, then epoxy coating would likely be your better choice.

Epoxy floor coating is known for its resistance to chemicals and chemical reactions, making it the ideal finish for areas that may experience plenty of spills or interactions with chemicals (e.g. hospitals, industrial warehouses).

Standard polished concrete, on the other hand, is known to react with some acids and heavy chemicals, which could damage its surface. Some polished concrete floors, however, can be coated with a special material to make it more resistant to chemicals.

Maintenance

Polished concrete is much easier to clean and maintain than epoxy floor coating, typically requiring just water to clean it and maintain its condition. This makes it suitable for those who don’t want to spend too much time or money cleaning their floors.

Epoxy floor coating, meanwhile, often needs detergents or other agents to clean it thoroughly and remove the build-up of dirt and grime. Cleaning and maintaining epoxy floor coats can also be more difficult if parts of it have flaked or peeled off.

What’s Right for Your Space?

Every property is different, so you’ll need to evaluate your space and assess what you truly need from your floors. It’s all about matching your needs with what the floor finish offers.

If you’ve been staying up to date with the current styles in interior design, you may have noticed that polished concrete is becoming a popular option for many homes and living spaces.

And we’re not surprised.

With all the features and benefits that polished concrete offers, they’re one of the top choices for homeowners and interior designers.

Here’s why:

They’re Incredibly Durable

As far as durable floors go, polished concrete sits near the top of the list.

Polished concrete is incredibly durable, and it can last for several years (if not decades) with proper care and maintenance. In fact, it’s common for polished concrete floors to last almost a decade before requiring any major maintenance or restoration.

A lot of this has to do with the natural hardness and solid structure of concrete. This makes it naturally tough and hard-wearing. It takes a great deal of effort to damage polished concrete, making it an ideal surface for high-traffic areas like living rooms, lounges, and welcome areas. The solid surface of polished concrete floors also makes them highly resistant to stains and marks.

For added protection, some polished concrete floors can even be coated and sealed with special coatings to make them more resistant to liquids.

Because of its toughness and durability, polished concrete floors are considered to be the most cost-effective and long-lasting flooring solutions.

They’re Undeniably Stylish

There are few floor finishes today that look as beautiful and striking as polished concrete.

Polished concrete floors are undeniably stylish, presenting a look that blends seamlessly with many of today’s homes and buildings. Its clean and simple aesthetic is perhaps the best complement to any modern living space, giving you a minimalist feel that’s uncluttered and elegant.

Although this look may have seemed to too plain and uninteresting a few decades ago, this clean aesthetic is precisely the reason it’s now a favourite among interior designers and home decorators. Instead of distracting you with floor patterns and designs, this aesthetic draws your attention to the rest of your room or living space. This allows you to create a more cohesive look for your living space – an advantage that many interior designers and homeowners love.

No-Fuss Maintenance

When people choose polished concrete, they’re not just investing in a floor that’s long-lasting and stylish. They’re also investing in a floor that requires minimal maintenance.

Because polished concrete is naturally tough and dense, it’s less likely to accumulate dirt and debris on its surface. This makes clean-ups quick and easy. In most cases, all that’s required to clean polished concrete floors is a quick sweep or a good once-over with a mop and water.

This low-key maintenance doesn’t just save you time and energy, it also saves you money in the long run. With polished concrete, you won’t need to worry about using special cleaners and expensive products to maintain its condition. Just wipe it and clean it lightly, and your concrete floor will last for years.

With most of us having less free time today than ever, polished concrete’s no-fuss maintenance is a major advantage.

Working with reputable, accredited applicators Pyrafloor Polished Concrete continues to create lasting impressions in residential, commercial and and retail refurbishment projects.

Often by polishing up a small pad of concrete on site the project each party, the owner, builder, designer and architect can understand exactly how shiny, how much stone exposure, what the slip resistance will be and for your applicator to understand the floor completely before they begin.

Polished Concrete Floors stone exposure

Cream Polish, no stone exposure

Salt and pepper, a light grind revealing a low stone exposure. Often also referred to as a Hit and Miss as the stone can be scattered in some areas more than others

Mid to Full Exposure, a heavier diamond grind in the first pass – 2 to reveal and exposure more stone and aggregate

Repairing your older floor in the refurb process

Specifically products can be used including C2 Crack Fix hairline and surface cracks to work with further movement. Depending on the depth and extent of the cracks other cementitious or liquid grout and repair products may be used for the application

Joints and Structural areas of the slab also need to be repaired. Commonly products including C2 Joint Fill are used in these applications as a structural repair product.

Fast setting qualities of the C2 Joint Fill and Crack Fix allow faster turnarounds in the initial process.

Polished Concrete Floor Gloss Levels

Matte, Matte finished floors provide an industrial or rustic polished concrete floor finish with minimal to no official reflection.

Satin, a mid range floor, one of the most popular polished mechanically using a Lithium or Potassium silicate and resin polishing pads before being sealed with C2 Protector, C2 Seal or C2 Ultra seal to achieve the desired finish

Gloss, a shiny, reflective polished concrete floor sealed with a product like C2 Seal or C2 Ultra seal

Hardening Old Concrete Floors for Polishing

On older, or softer floors (poured at 25MPA) there is sometimes a requirement to densify and harden the floor more prior to the initial grind. In this instance your Pyrafloor applicator will discuss options with you to ensure you get the very best out of your floor.

Creating lasting impressions includes hard wearing, dust proof, long lasting floors that you’ll be proud of.

The key to an effective construction or refurbishment project is for your contractor to use effective equipment to remove the existing floor covering to bring the floor back to it’s original surface ready for the concrete to be ground and polished.

In some cases adhesives, glues, or coatings, tile bedding, membrane or epoxy is left on the surface after this process and needs to be removed with the right diamond tools to ensure minimal damage to your concrete to bring it to the best result when polished.

Color is not only seen by our eyes, it also penetrates through our mind and affects our feelings.

Color has been a great part of human life since the dawn of the civilization and now it is a known fact that color affects consciousness and mood of people.

Selecting the right combination of colors for your food serving establishment has every potential of enhancing your customer’s appetite, improving their moods and increasing the overall turnover. But, sadly enough, selecting the wrong set of colors can have the exact opposite effect on your customers, and thereby, your business. So, you need to indulge your customers with a beauty of color while they enjoy your delicacy.

To achieve this feat, you need to understand the psychological effects of colors and how to exploit them for your own leverage alongside your newly polished concrete floor.

Hues that affect human behavior

Red

Red radiates energy, shoves in urgency and can increase the appetite. As it makes your guests hungry, it also makes them finish the meal quickly. This is pretty useful for a fast environment where you need fast turnovers.

As per the passion and excitement enhancing capacity of this color, Red can be ideal for fast food restaurants and fast serving eateries.

Orange

Orange is the smiling color. It surrounds people with a happy, joyful feeling and suppresses the potential sad feeling.

Ideal for fast food joints, Ice Cream bars and places where people might feel guilty for eating poorly.

Yellow

Yellow is the vibrant color that induces excitement into you. It has the same effect as Orange and can potentially makes the customers happy and optimistic.

Ethnic restaurants, bistros, cafes, and fast casual restaurants can utilize the potential of Yellow to enhance their business.

Green

Green lies in the middle of the color band of visible lights and it is the best soother for human eyes. Green exhibits comfort and relaxation. The color of the nature stimulates harmony and tranquility and health.

Healthy food providers, vegetarian and vegan restaurants and salad bars are the ideal choice for this color.

Brown

Brown provides guests with the feeling of stability and ruggedness. This earthy color also seeps a sensation of comfort. It can affect the feeling of the customers in such a way that they will want to come back.

Coffee shops (obviously because of the color of the coffee!), Bistros, bars can be the best candidates for brown.

White

The color of purity and cleanliness, white is a color that can bring the feeling of happiness and sincerity. It can bring in a very leisurely and relaxing sensation. White makes a smaller place look larger.

Restaurants with small area, Upscale eateries and wedding venues and utilize the white’s latent potential.

Blue

The color of the ocean and sky can reduce the appetite but can increase thirst. Blue shows peace, reliability, masculinity. But in a restaurant blue might not be best of choices.

Bars, Coffeeshops, Cafes, Seaside restaurants can have blue. But need to be careful about the fact that bright blue shades from the walls can be reflected on the food and can make them look less tempting.

Black

While black gives the feeling of authority and power, it also gives a feeling of grief, fear and sophistication. Black can be used to enhance other colors but too much of black can radiate a dark aura.

Classy dining and contemporary restaurants often feature black, along with bars.

Color your Menu

Like the interior, the color of your menu also affects the customers. You should choose the color for your menu while considering their potential interaction with customers. Same principles for the selecting interior colors are applicable for the menu, too. Also, how the colors in the menu communicate with the color of the spaces is another factor of consideration. Make sure they don’t clash with each other.

Ideas for color schemes

Light Color Scheme

Ivory, White, Pale yellow, Light Grey.

Light colors make a small place looks large. They also set the mode in a relaxed tone. Light schemes are excellent choice for upscale restaurants, bistros. But not suggested for quick shop type places and fast eateries.

Dark Color Scheme

Crimson, brown, purple, navy, dark green.

Dark colors are ideal choice for creating a romantic and cozy environment. Some bars, romantic bistros can reap the benefit of dark color schemes.

Creamy rich browns can work wonders in a café setting. But in the scenario of less natural lights, opting for dark color can make the space looks smaller. In such cases, lighter colors like Resene Rich Cream, Resene Melting Moment or Resene Clotted Cream can improve the environment.

Warm Color Schemes

Yellow, terracotta, orange, red, gold

Radiating a vibrant effect, warm colors can be welcoming for a short period, but it can bore your customers for a longer period. This type of color scheme is expecially suitable for fast food restaurants and other similar high-volume environments.

Earthy Color Scheme

Brown, olive green, beige, umber, dark orange

Colors common to nature, this scheme reflects the natural food colors. Suitable for relaxed and welcoming environments such as cafes. Earthy scheme is also very suitable for healthy food joints and salad bars as well as vegetarian and vegan food establishments.

Pastel Color Scheme

Sky blue, pink, light yellow, lavender, pale green

Very soft and light in nature, this was very popular in 1980s. Bistros, cafes and casual eateries can use this scheme with efficiency. These colors have almost neutral tone to them and can blend well with all types of decoration.

While selecting a color theme for your establishment, it is very important to consider the influence the colors can have inside the customers’ mind. But whatever color you choose, make sure that they are in line with your purpose.

Wrapping it up,

Regardless of the style, seating or layout of your restaurant of café space it’s essential that you get the lighting right. When it comes to food and ambience, nothing sets the mood faster than the lighting and reflection of your floor.

The layout of your lights with a polished concrete floors is a critical component as each shadow and light gives an impressive reflection. Lighting now day’s offers creative, the original, different shapes, sizes, colours and materials to add drama, mystery, magic or tone to your café and restaurant eating area.

Polished concrete flooring has proven to decrease lighting costs in a working environment as the reflection and lighting provides efficiency.

Lighting in an upbeat party venue or storehouse will be very different to a restaurant designed for a romantic evening out over a few glasses of wine.

Regardless of the kind of atmosphere you’re working for our need to consider what the key points are to match the ambience you are looking for.

Interior design is enhanced with exposed bricks, metal frames, wood and polished concrete – along with recycled.

Warm and rustic, raw and industrial, depending on what elements you choose.

The shift towards spaces that bring outdoors inside is set to continue. Greenery always adds a buzz to your space. Think floor to ceiling windows that overlook the majestic outdoors, bi-fold doors, or louvre spread windows to soften and divide the inside to the out. Lush green plants, ferns, or leafy greens help ensure the interiors always stay looking sharp and give some fresh ambience in the room.

Getting a perfect polish, starts before you actually arrive on site. Concrete finishing and placement can play a big role in a lot of defects in the final polish.

These defects or imperfections are usually brought back on the polisher as something they haven’t done right.

Understanding finishing and placement can help you to educate your concreters on how you want the slab placed or finished in order to give your client the perfect floor.

Make your floor be the picture that everyone is envious of.

THESE DAYS THERE ARE 3 DIFFERENT TYPES OF METHODS THAT 99% OF CONCRETERS WILL USE TO FINISH EVERY SLAB.

TRADITIONAL SCREED

POWER TROWEL

LASER SCREEDING

2 COMMON TYPES OF REINFORCEMENT USED IN MOST CONCRETE SLABS

Rebar is the most common type of Reinforced used.

Wire mesh is commonly used for non-structural slabs.

TRADITIONAL SCREED

Lowest Level

This has widely been regarded as the most common method in concrete finishing yet the least effective. Typically a screed bar is used or a piece of wood, meaning floor flatness is not as accurate as other methods.

As you can see in the picture there are screed marks visible in this floor which cannot be removed and is due to the concreter resting his screed which pushes down the aggregate underneath.

VIBRATORY SCREEDING

Middle Level

Vibratory screeding uses power to better level the concrete surface.

Reduced muscle power required, a finisher can work standing up and the vibration of the motor on the screed helps to smooth the concrete.

Often used on smaller residential or commercial projects. Larger projects often will make use of the larger equipment to get in where space permits.

Screed bars are easy to attach, remove, and replace, and they come in different sized lengths. The longer the screed often the more awkward and heavy it is to work.

LASER SCREEDING

Highest Level

Laser Screeds set the standard for large concrete pours and ensure your

concrete is finished flat.

Most precise levelling method

Commonly used for polished concrete floor projects

Mechanically powerful and faster than alternative methods

Laser screeds ensure a faster installation time of the concrete

CONCRETE FINISHING BEST PRACTICES

There are several types of attachments used under screed machines. Where a concrete floor is being poured to polish we have identified the best attachment to be the PAN to get the best and flattest possible finish.

PAN’s help to ensure 15-20% flatter finish than Screed finish.

Float pans move material and flatten the floor more because of the weight but they do not tighten the slab.

POWER TROWEL BLADES

When finishing with a PAN blade to move a lot of concrete, filling in the lows and taking off high sections – we recommend your concretor uses either Plastic or Teflon blades to finish off.

Finish Blades help to ensure the hardest possible finish. These blades help to get he

concrete to it’s hardest point before being blackened or burnt.

COMMON PROBLEMS WITH EDGING

If the edges of the floor are not finished properly, they become more challenging to polish and make consistent with the rest of the floor

Hand trowelling does not work well for polishing, as the colour and texture difference will show

Our recommendation is to use a Power Trowel over the edges across a form, or adjacent slab, to give a tight finish to the edges a power trowel used in an anti-clock wise direction will compact the slab more than a hand trowel will. It will eliminate problems that occur, as seen in the picture. Because this was done with a hand trowel you can see the floor is not as tight and will polish up differently.

By making the finishing and placement right you will eliminate a lot of problems in the higher polishing steps

A l ittle care and patience during the floor pour will help make easy polishing!
